Transportation and traffic are key quality-of-life issues in the M3 region. The Middlesex 3 Transportation Management Association (M3 TMA) helps businesses, property managers, and municipalities support their employees’ commuting choices by providing flexible and sustainable transportation solutions.
Serving Bedford, Billerica, Burlington, Carlisle, Chelmsford, Lowell, Tewksbury, Tyngsborough, Westford, and Woburn, the M3 TMA offers shuttle services connecting MBTA Alewife Station to key employment hubs, carpool and bike programs, and employer-driven transit benefits. These programs improve regional mobility, reduce congestion, and help businesses attract and retain talent.

Getting To And Around The M3 Region
Middlesex 3 communities are located 15 miles northwest of downtown Boston/Cambridge and offer a robust transportation network providing easy access to points locally, regionally and beyond. Whether by bicycle, car, freight, bus, train or in the air, this vibrant corridor and all of its amenities are a quick and easy ride away.
US Route 3 and the Lowell Connector run through the eleven communities.
Access to Route 95 in Burlington, 495 in Lowell, Westford and Chemlsford, and Routes 2 and 93 in Lexington and neighboring communities.
By Car
Easy access to two international airports: Logan Airport and Manchester(NH)/Boston Regional Airport, both located within 25 miles of the coalition communities.
Bedford is also home to Hanscom Field with limited commercial flight offerings within the Northeast US and Southeast Canada.
By Air
Public Transit
Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) bus service.
Regular commuter rail service into Boston via the Purple Line (Commuter Rail) with stops in downtown Lowell and North Billerica.
Lowell Regional Transportation Authority (LRTA) services all of Lowell as well as parts of Chelmsford, Billerica and Burlington.
The town of Lexington runs the local LexPress bus, and the town of Bedford operates the Bedford Local Transit (BLT) bus.
Other Modes
Minuteman Bikeway in Bedford and Lexington, the terminus of an 11-mile, heavily-used bike trail that ends in Cambridge.
The Bedford Narrow-Gauge Rail-Trail connects Bedford and Billerica on a converted rail line.
Bruce Freeman Rail Trail which runs through Chelmsford to the Lowell Line.
