Eversource has developed a plan to meet the area’s energy needs for the next decade and beyond. The existing substation on Middlesex Turnpike in Burlington is reaching its design capacity and upgrades, including the installation of a mobile transformer, will secure the Town’s supply of energy in the short-term (next 3-4 years). Demand at the substation is expected to grow more quickly than supply in the future due to development and the transition to electrification. Additional electrical infrastructure will be required in Burlington to ensure safe and reliable power for the Town into the future.
In addition to a proposed new electric substation in Burlington, which will be on about two acres of Eversource-owned property accessed via Winn Street, the plan also entails approximately 2.5 miles of new overhead transmission line. This new line and its supporting structures will be installed in an existing transmission line corridor running from the proposed new substation in Burlington through Wilmington into Woburn.
